Damien Ah Yen

Medical Trustee

Damien is a Hamilton-based general surgeon with subspecialty elective interests in colorectal and complex hernia surgery. He currently consults in private practice and is a consultant general and trauma surgeon at Waikato Hospital.

Originally from Samoa, Damien moved to New Zealand for medical training and returned to Samoa for his internship where he discovered his passion for general surgery. He is committed to supporting Pacific students, helping to promote a diverse and equitable health workforce, and has volunteered in Samoa with the New Zealand Medical Relief Team.

Damien is also currently Hospital Supervisor of Training and an instructor for national trauma and critical care courses and has held a series of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching roles. In 2025 he was appointed an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Division of Health at the University of Waikato.

In addition to supporting pro-bono surgeries through the Trust's Community Surgery Programme, Damien is also committed to ensuring equity within the health sector.
